to Elizabeth Pohl, one of three UCSD-SOM students who received
funding through the Friends of the International Center Fellowship!
The following is a brief synopsis of her experience:
As a recipient of the Friends of the
International Center Fellowship, I participated in the MEDICC
(Medical Education Cooperation with Cuba) program last summer.
Through MEDICC, I shadowed a primary-care physician in the Western
province of Pinar del Rio, visited a community clinic in a rural
mountain town, and toured hospitals and centers for disease prevention
in Havana. My month in Cuba illuminated both the strengths and
weaknesses of the Cuban health care system, and enabled me to
make comparisons to health care in the United States. Studying
in Cuba affirmed my conviction that dedicated health promotion
positively affects health outcomes and disease prevention. And
given my interest in preventive medicine, I will draw from my
experiences in Cuba to shape my practice.
