Zena Hatziris ('03) wins Fretom Award

Congratulations to Zena Hatziris (Class of 2003) for receiving the 2002-2003 Fretom Research Fund award!   This award is given to a graduating 4th year medical student receiving the highest score on the Clinical Practice Exam.

The founders of the Fretom Research Fund, Dr. and Mrs. Thomas H. McGavack, wish that these funds be used to assist and encourage a worthy student to complete his or her studies in one or more branches of the medical sciences.  Zena was awarded honors in numerous preclinical and clinical courses, and immersed herself in research projects in her first year of medical school.  She spent the summer between her first and second year of medical school at UCLA doing her independent study project in basic science research in the Division of Dermatology.  She has published four papers throughout her medical school career and continues to do research in her senior year here at UCSD.  Zena has been a camp counselor at Camp Worthy, a summer retreat for inner city kids, and continues to work actively as a camp organizer and fundraiser.  Zena has successfully demonstrated an outstanding ability to integrate clinical knowledge with interpersonal skills to formulate an extensive differential diagnosis and treatment plans.

We congratulate her on the Fretom Research Award and wish her great success in her medical career.

Good job!
