Desiree Leek
NIH Research Grant

The UCSD School of Medicine is proud to announce the outstanding accomplishment of our medical student, Desiree Leek, MS4. As a first year student, Desiree was awarded a summer NIH research grant that allowed her enough time to get her project started. The title of this project was Physical Activity During Youth Sports Practices. She then continued her research while completing four years of medical school requirements. She was able to present her findings as the main author of one of two posters that were presented at the Society of Behavioral Medicine Conference [2010, Seattle, WA]. The article of the same title has now been published in the Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, December 6, 2010. This research study and the issue of youth activity have received much media attention, prompting over 50 different stories including exposure on NBC Nightly News, U.S. News & World Report, and USA Today. The extended UCSD School of Medicine community is very proud of Desiree, who graduates this year, and wishes her much success in the future.
