to Tony Huy Pham ('02)
for winning the election as next year's Western Region Chair!
At the recent Regional Meeting of the Organization of Student Representatives (OSR) of the American Association of Medical Colleges (AAMC), which took place April 22-25 at the Asilomar conference facility in Northern California, our very own Tony Pham ('02) won the election as next year's Western Region Chair (one of four regions). Also in attendance were UCSD's alternate represntative, Chris Wiesner ('03), and the alternate-in-training, Kathleen Hubbard ('04).
Among the topics discussed at the converence were "service learning", such as that done in free clinics; alternative careers in medicine such as public health; the nature of the Dean's Letter; and MedCAREERS. The exchange of ideas among student represntatives was productive, and made clear the importance of staying abreast of the latest developments in the AAMC. The OSR at last fall's national meeting took on such issues as the possible redesign of the MCAT, student health insurance, student debt, and credentialing; one of the subjects likely to arise at upcoming meetins is resident work hours. These are issues that affect not jsut medical students, but also physicians (i.e. you in the future!). So keep in touch with your OSR reps with you thoughts and questions about them.
Also be aware that UCSD is sponsoring next spring's meeting, which will take place in Palm Springs. This is a good opportunity for UCSD to have some limelight, and for the Western Region to shine as well (we are the smallest of the four). Look forward to further updates as the meeting approaches.
